Slitter Tooling Storage Cabinet and Knife Box
Proper storage, handling and maintenance of slitter tooling enhances tool life and preserves the quality of the cut, as well as maximizing your profits. Since slitter tooling is used in a vertical position on the arbors, proper storage and transport requires this same orientation. This greatly reduces the possibility of edge nicks and the accumulation of dust and dirt on the tool's face.
Dienes offers custom-built permanent tooling storage cabinets, specifically designed to provide the utmost in tool protection and ease of slitter setup. A mobile knife box is also offered, ideal for transporting tooling from a central tool storage area or when transporting the tooling for regrinding/polishing. Tips on proper maintenance of tooling are also given on the reverse side.

Maintenance Tips
Permanent Rubber Stripper Ring Storage Cabinet |
To ensure long-term gains from your slitter tooling investment, the following maintenance tips are offered.
Before & After Setups - Before setups, wipe tools and inspect for nicks and dings. After use, wipe and apply a light application of oil. Place tooling in a nearby permanent store cabinet that inhibits humidity and holds knives in a normal vertical position... or transport tooling in a protective mobile knife box to the tool storage area. In severe climates, permanent rust inhibiting coatings maybe desirable for spacers.
Dienes offers ideal permanent tool storage cabinets and protective mobile knife boxes as described in this bulletin. Permanent rust inhibiting coatings for spacers, with laser-engraved actual sizes, are also available.
Tooling Dirt Groves - Better tooling is manufactured with a dirt groove on knives having a thickness of ' or greater. This allows a safe area for small amounts of dirt or grease to exist after wiping or sliding tools on the arbor.
Knife designations and sizes will stay legible when they are stamped (prior to hardening) in the tool's dirt groove.
Dienes' knives include this important dirt groove with tooling designation/size on all sizes above .200".
Sharpening - Dull or chipped knives (usually indicated by excessive burr when horizontal clearances are okay, or by repeat marks on slit coils) should be reground, removing a minimum of .015" to ensure that fatigued material is removed. CAUTION: When edges become dull, hairline O.D. cracks can lead to catastrophic knife failure under excessive knife loads.
Tooling should be transported in a safe, suitable container whether sharpening is done in-house or sent to an outside service. The mobile knife box described in this bulletin is ideal for such transport.
Dienes offers reliable requalifying and reconditioning of your tooling, including dimensional inspection, sharpening and re-etching, all with a fast turn-around.
Polishing - Edge face buildup, often a problem when slitting softer non-ferrous materials, progressively and adversely affects the knife's cutting abilities and its dimensional characteristics. Knives should be properly polished occasionally.
Tooling should be transported in a safe, suitable container whether polishing is done in-house or sent to an outside services. The mobile knife box described in this bulletin is ideal for such transport.
Dienes offers low-cost face polishing services, which restore knife faces to an original new face requirement (depending on initial surface finish). A 2-3 micro-inch finish can be obtained without losing critical thickness accuracy. An automatic face polishing machine is also offered for your in-house polishing. Refer to Dienes Bulletin P4000-001.
